Heading into Algebra 1 this year, I wanted to add in some different activities that my students grew accustomed to that weren't just book work or IXL's. I know there was a big push away from worksheets when I was in college. It was like "if they aren't doing something hands on, they aren't learning." I can see where this line of thinking comes from, but if your freshmen are like my freshmen, you can't just do all hands on. They don't have the self control for that. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I set out to find activities that are still different then problems from a book, but are still keeping them somewhat engaged. These matching activities are one of the simplest ways I came up with. I really like to use them as bellwork the morning after I teach the lesson. The matching itself doesn't take too long, but it gives them the ability to work different problems out and it only requires paper and a pencil. I also know that my class runs way smoother when they have bellwork and they come sit down and get to work. Here's an example of my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Dividing-Polynomials-Matching-Activity-4490187" target="_blank">dividing polynomials matching activity</a>. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also love to break them out for test or quiz review. I will often hand out any we didn't get to during our chapter for test/quiz review and then post the answer keys online for them to check. This is a great way for them to use them for self assessment prior to an assessment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a plethora of <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mrstech/Search:matching" target="_blank">ones for the Algebra 1 classroom</a> at this link, but would love to hear how you would use them in your classroom! </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
This year my school implemented PDP’s (or Professional
Development Plans). What can I do to develop professionally that will make me a
better teacher? Well part of what will make me a better teacher is if I teach
my students in a way that jives with them. I’m not saying to change what you do
every day, but adding in some activities that are hands-on or out of the norm
will totally get them engaged – which can be really hard in math. So I decided
that this was one of my goals for my PDP – hands-on learning in the Algebra 1
classroom. It isn’t easy to come up with hands-on activities for the high school
math classroom, but sorts are one that I have had a lot of success with in my
classroom this year. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Y’all. Sorting is so fun and hands on. It does take a little
prep to cut the squares out (&& laminate if you want to reuse them),
but there are ways to cut down on this. Sometimes I just throw the cards up in
a document on the white board and have students create their own sort on a
piece of paper and write down the correct equations/numbers under the correct
category. Sometimes I have them cut them out and sort themselves, while other
times I have it prepped and ready and laminated for lots of years of use. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have whipped up these sort mats and then have students
sort the cards into all kinds of things – parallel and perpendicular
slopes/lines, slope intercept or point slope form, properties of numbers,
arithmetic or geometric sequence and so on. I love watching them get their hands
moving and think through all of the different problems that are cut out. These
typically don’t take long (and some are always done very quickly), but it is a
great refresher the day after you teach a topic, or a great way to review for a
test or quiz. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After the students are done, I throw the answer key up on
the board and we always discuss which ones they had sorted into the wrong
category and why they ended up there. This really allows us to troubleshoot the
things that get students tripped up between forms, equations and numbers. They
also tell me that they remember the reasons that they belong in another
category better when we do these before assessments. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Do you use something like this in your classroom? What kind
of topics do you think you could use a sort for in your classroom?<o:p></o:p></div>

I am currently sitting on the couch between both of my coonhounds getting all of the pup cuddles & watching March Madness (Go Vols, right?). My day so far has consisted of Starbucks, a mani/pedi (because not many things make me feel more like a woman than fresh nails), laying in the sunshine & reading a book, and then helping address invite es to my brothers wedding.<br />
<br />
I AM THRIVING.<br />
<br />
Guys. I think I am made for this life. I have been making salads, cooking 3 meals a day, eating a TON of greens and sipping on kombucha like its water. Every time my husband comments on how nice it is to have lunch ready when he gets home from work (he works a split shift - personal trainer probs), I always remind him that it would be like this if I was a stay at home dog mom. Obvi, I always laugh because pretty sure I wouldn't be cooking three meals a day or sipping pooch like it's my job if I was a stay at home dog mom, but who knows.<br />
<br />
I have a passion to be creative & a passion for a simple way of life and these breaks bring out the best of both of those, BUT I also love teaching. I also love my students. I love my school. I love teaching math. I love my calling. I just wanted to take a few minutes to be goofy about my spring break, but also to remind y'all that it is OKAY to LOVE having a week off to get to relax and do all the things you want to do. At the same time, you can also LOVE TEACHING & your job & your students. We work HARD, y'all. We work far more than 40 hours a week. We come home and grade papers or stay up thinking about our students who were struggling that day. We go to the grocery store and also pick up a few things for projects in our classroom & you know you can't walk past the dollar spot at Target without thinking of a way to use SOMETHING in there in your classroom.<br />
<br />
I firmly believe that because we work hard, we should break hard. Don't pick up your computer. Do your lesson plans before you leave and then take a full week off to just enjoy family, or your dogs, or to be a tourist in your own town. Eat what you want. Drink what you want. Stay up late & sleep in. AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT.<br />
<br />
So for now, imma hop off here, go cuddle my pups real close & be thankful for I put some food in the crockpot earlier so I don't have to cook dinner. Also, drink more kombucha.<br />
<br />
K, love you all, bye.<br />

Not all of them, obviously, but I have a lot of boys who have very little interest in math who are currently very interested in basketball and all the fun that March Madness brings. In order to capture their attention a little, I put together this March Madness bulletin board and we played an activity in class to go with it as a quiz review.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First, let me tell you a little bit about this board. First, I printed out and cut the title for the board. Then I made 100 basketballs with polynomial problems on them for my students to solve. I meant to print it on orange paper, but I forgot to tell my service worker to do that, sooo maybe next time! (oops.) Anyways, I printed out and cut the basketballs also, threw up a portable basketball hoop and used a few sheets of paper to make a scoreboard. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So here's how the "interactive" part of the bulletin board came about. My students are always trying to shoot their paper wads into my trashcan, and so I figured, why not let them shoot it into this hoop. I gave both teams 60 seconds to use whatever they had to make a basketball to use for the game. I wrote their team names on our make shift score board and I readied the basketball math problems. Now, I have very different classroom dynamics, so I did this a little different in each of my classes but here are the two main ways I played the game</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Hand each student out a card. Let them solve it on their own. Go around the room and have students share their polynomial and answer. If they got it right, their team gets two points. If they got it wrong, one of their teammates had a chance to get a "rebound" and answer it for them. This gave the team 1 point. If both of those students missed, the other team got a "breakaway" and had a chance to steal the two points. I went back and forth between the two teams allowing them to answer. This was great for my honors students who knew the content and aren't shy to answer problems aloud in class. It was a tight game. </li>
<li>For my non-honors class, I had them go one at a time trying to solve the same question on the board. The student that got it correct first, got two points for their team. If they got it wrong, the other team player at the board got a change to get the rebound and breakaway for the two points. They then wrote the correct answer and their name on the basketball to hang on the board. </li>
</ul>
<div>
With both of these, I had multiple polynomial problems solved with correct answers and students names (hello, displaying student work) to display on my bulletin board AND we got to review for our quiz while doing it. Can you say double win?<br />

I didn't think so. I came up with a project for my honors students to complete. I like to leave the window for creation very open because I want them to think outside of the box for their projects. I have had cake and brownies cut in the shape of pi. I have had pie with decorations in the form of 3.14. I have had posters and murals and clay and cups and everything else you can imagine in the shape of pi or 3.14. I love to see what they can come up with when they aren't put in a box. <div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMdMimqK0yK-FB7M11Nf3efq5YuJTbYIs_CwKhBdXFWZ2hZiFNyKnPrH5tYIIHSxGSUAVetFweniGRiqj3z8Ax7SsR9Y_BORSGkTnuhk9ZS4pp-ZJreruNHk9wmPOcP9oX0rTkUkFI/s1600/Pi+Day+Honors+Project.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="816" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMdMimqK0yK-FB7M11Nf3efq5YuJTbYIs_CwKhBdXFWZ2hZiFNyKnPrH5tYIIHSxGSUAVetFweniGRiqj3z8Ax7SsR9Y_BORSGkTnuhk9ZS4pp-ZJreruNHk9wmPOcP9oX0rTkUkFI/s320/Pi+Day+Honors+Project.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZIbvo7LdXtJqUsvWk428dcCO3wvtfEkiV36Wn7q-ScGg9byknmZ56SYF03YYf5ecg55TZszV-Abp5v1wDmYnyDDwBDo_TaxV0MrQi6tWt6qGsZxRNJzo9xdJASckpAMY4-fHQd9Gh/s1600/Pi+Day+Honors+Project+Algebra+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="816" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZIbvo7LdXtJqUsvWk428dcCO3wvtfEkiV36Wn7q-ScGg9byknmZ56SYF03YYf5ecg55TZszV-Abp5v1wDmYnyDDwBDo_TaxV0MrQi6tWt6qGsZxRNJzo9xdJASckpAMY4-fHQd9Gh/s320/Pi+Day+Honors+Project+Algebra+1.png" width="247" /></a><br />
<div>
<div>
* You'll see that I do offer extra credit for the "most creative" project in class. I use this as a small encouragement for students to try something beyond the common Pinterest searches for pi day projects. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
** The only additional comment I made in class is that they can't just but a pie at the store and call it their project because that represent PIE not PI. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So we are going to start class with these honors students doing their quick presentations on their projects. Once they do those, we will move into this <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pi-Day-Digital-Resource-3042281" target="_blank">Pi Day digital activity</a> that I created which is free in my TpT store. I included a few snapshots below for you to see it. If there are any food items brought in, I'll let them eat those while they work on this digital activity. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Even though this isn't coordinating exactly with our lessons for the week, it will be fun to celebrate this math holiday and it gives my honors students an opportunity to present in front of the class. </div>

I know that I am not a perfect teacher, so I really do like when my principal comes in because I think she gives good feedback about some of the things that I might miss in my classroom.<br />
<br />
Anyways, one of the requirements (or checklist items to look for) in our classrooms is that we are displaying student work. This year I have THE FRIDGE. I found the idea on Pinterest and immediately fell in love. The students can hang things that they are proud of up on the board. I have lots of A+ math tests, a few tests/quizzes from other classes, some principals list certificates, a college acceptance letter, and even one drug & alcohol class certificate (that one you have to take before you can get your learners permit). All of these are small sentiments of my students and the things that make them proud. I love it & I love the ability to display their work in my classroom. Also, lets be real - most fridges these days aren't even magnetic so most of these students aren't going home and hanging their tests on their literal fridges!<br />
<br />
As I was brainstorming for next year a little bit, I knew I needed a new idea to display student work. If you are a high school math teacher, you will understand the struggle. They don't turn many things in (besides assessments), and they don't do a ton of work that would be hangupable (is that a word?). That is when I came up with the idea for this bulletin board series. I am testing it out with this one to see how it goes, but I am excited for the potential next year in my classroom.<br />
<br />
Basically, each of these bulletin boards will be seasonal. They each have different letters that I will print & cut out to use as the title. Then there are 100 different "problems" to solve for each of the topics that correspond with the season and what we are learning in Algebra 1 at the time. I am planning to use them as exit tickets at some point during the chapter and then I will display them on the board along with the seasonal theme. BOOM! Student work. Easy to change out. Seasonal. & Cute.<br />

It's been a while since I have gotten on here, but I am going to try and get better about that. Let me give you a quick update on my career change, and then I'll get into the topic at hand.<br />
<br />
Math was my FAVORITE subject as a student. I had an INCREDIBLE Algebra 1 teacher and I was one of those kids who was SO much better at Algebra than I was at Geometry. When I got to college, the upper level math classes seemed overwhelming and I had a heart for reaching all students in my classroom, so I majored in Special Education. At the time there was a huge push towards inclusion, so I chose this major to learn more about how I could reach EVERY student in my classroom. I took the classes necessary to get my K-6 certification and graduated with dual cert. My first job was teaching 6th grade math, science & technology at my old K-12 school. I loved it, but through that year of teaching a technology elective, I fell in love with tech. At the time, I was also getting my masters in Educational Technology. I was the Ed Tech Specialist at my school for 3 years while teaching a plethora of electives and overseeing the iPad classroom for our K-5 teachers (see all my previous blog posts about iPad apps). Well my Algebra 1 teacher announced she was retiring last March and told me that I should consider the position. I looked up what it would take for me to get certified, talked to my husband about it, and asked the High School principal for the job the next day. A few weeks later, it was mine and I could not have been more excited. Fast forward to August, my class schedule is Algebra 1, 8th Grade Math (for non Algebra 1 students), and Math For College Readiness (a Florida class basically for HS kids who need a 4th math and don't want to take pre-cal). Another cool thing that came out of this? My mom is doing my old job (6th grade math & science) - so we get to teach and muddy these math waters together. It's seriously amazing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpao35ge5FVIMe8SPQdNGeUfWUl9fmpJw6LeP33hBIoPdakI9WaMtz7eGqgZGTUjuQmd7GncmokuuoD7IrL_ioaSQOjjvUECvJLMWQ3hNOc7g8bTMJ8J70n2rM0crqn5lhiH6AuEWv/s1600/algebra-1-teacher.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpao35ge5FVIMe8SPQdNGeUfWUl9fmpJw6LeP33hBIoPdakI9WaMtz7eGqgZGTUjuQmd7GncmokuuoD7IrL_ioaSQOjjvUECvJLMWQ3hNOc7g8bTMJ8J70n2rM0crqn5lhiH6AuEWv/s320/algebra-1-teacher.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
TASK CARDS -<br />
Now we're moving into where task cards come into play. When I was in math, class ran the same way every day (minus a random assessment day) -<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Check Homework</li>
<li>Introduce New Lesson</li>
<li>Guided Practice</li>
<li>Independent Practice</li>
<li>Homework</li>
</ol>
<div>
This worked for us back then. It doesn't work for most of our kids now a days. My students can't sit still for 50 minutes of a math block. I wanted to keep the same format essentially, but knew I couldn't do that from their seats. Soooo I brought out the task cards (and by brought out, I mean I have spent HOURS creating task cards to use). So this is basically how my classroom now runs -</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Walk in & check homework answers on the board</li>
<li>Answer questions related to homework</li>
<li>Introduce lesson (& notes with practice problems)</li>
<li>Task Cards (or other activity)</li>
<li>IXL (or other activity)</li>
</ol>
I'm just going to share a couple ways that I use task cards to get students moving in the middle of math class. Here are some examples:<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Hang throughout the room. Let students walk around your room to locate all of the task cards. They need to solve each one in the box provided. Once they have found all the task cards, have them return to their seats.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Lay all of the cards out on student desks. Have them pass the cards to the left as they finish (think like the game spoons). When all of the cards get back to them, they are done. ** Sometimes I even move my chairs around or have students sit on the ground in a circle for this. They like the change of scenery.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Shown one at a time on the Smart Board or Document Cam. They each work it out on a scrap of paper/device/white board and show me the answer once they have it.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Hand out one to each student. Have them solve it on a sticky note and leave it in their pocket as an exit ticket.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Have students work in pairs to solve the problems.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">SCOOT: </span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: bold;">Directions</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">: Start at your desk. Look at the number at the top of the card you are answering. Write the answer to the question on the card in the corresponding box. You will have about 15 seconds at each seat, then the teacher will call SCOOT. When she calls SCOOT, you will “scoot” to the chair next to you and answer the question on the card at that seat. You will continue until your sheet is full. If you land on a card that says break, take a break until the teacher says scoot again.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">**</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Break cards are used if you have more than 30 students in your class to use each chair in the room. </span></li>
</ul>
</ul>
</div>
<br />
<div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are some stunning pictures (LOL) of me with hours worth of task cards & lamination - but I'm praying it all pays off when they are all prepared for next year. Also, major shout out to my service worker (who will probably never see this) who does the majority of my printing, laminating, and cutting - YOU THE REAL MVP, ABBEY. Anyways, I would love to hear how you use task cards in the classroom, if you use task cards in the classroom. </div>

It has been a hot minute. In the past year, I started a new job as a High School math teacher. I teach Algebra 1 & Math for College Readiness (a Florida class for high schoolers who need a 4th math and do not want to take pre-calculus, essentially). <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I went back to school today, but I wanted to share with you this simple activity that I used with my high schoolers to share about their break and their new year. I gave it to them digitally via Canvas, and had some paper copies available for students as well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
Anyways, my goal was for this to be bell work basically, so I only wanted them to take a few minutes to complete this. The front page has them set goals in 4 different categories:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Educational: What kind of goals do you have for school/your future education? (ex. complete all homework, get a better grade, apply to colleges, pass this class, etc.)</li>
<li>Kindness: What can you do this year to show kindness to those around you?</li>
<li>Social: You are the top 5 people you surround yourself with. Who are you surrounded by? Are they making you better? How can you make those around you better?</li>
<li>Personal: What are you going to do this year to make yourself better? (ex. fitness, healthy eating, driving safer, sleeping more, etc.)</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0M_dtqrP5waMCsrnCZVwh_Goz8Tm-tqsSNHHQ0fBNImbtHMB1-Fg35lznvFDVb8A89B5HilZUliSKxlKNARSDuwEcuyHVOklSweSnw1EwG6b0T-tBW2mA1a8to6ZxVlpC7kOp95t7/s1600/Slide1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0M_dtqrP5waMCsrnCZVwh_Goz8Tm-tqsSNHHQ0fBNImbtHMB1-Fg35lznvFDVb8A89B5HilZUliSKxlKNARSDuwEcuyHVOklSweSnw1EwG6b0T-tBW2mA1a8to6ZxVlpC7kOp95t7/s320/Slide1.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The back page was blank except for "Winter Break 2018" on the back. I allowed them to share with me anything that they would like about their break. Some talked about their Christmas gifts, while some shared about their travels. Some told me how they stayed up late every night playing fort nite, and others told me about their friends, family and meals. I let them share with words or pictures, as long as they shared something. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD-c8_Z4XmRRHH42eZuII1OJ_oPsVR0EHiPVSatJgCFg0e0LXezz-ohZagEeyuW_0eaI_K2k-Bhoz-Df-Rh4JDfgavtd2RuJN1M5Jyq4h5tml2q2F_yffbrFv44z6xSgBt1AWuKsfa/s1600/Slide2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD-c8_Z4XmRRHH42eZuII1OJ_oPsVR0EHiPVSatJgCFg0e0LXezz-ohZagEeyuW_0eaI_K2k-Bhoz-Df-Rh4JDfgavtd2RuJN1M5Jyq4h5tml2q2F_yffbrFv44z6xSgBt1AWuKsfa/s320/Slide2.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that was it. It was an easy activity that kept my students engaged and allowed them to share about their break before we jumped into multiplying and dividing decimals. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you want to use this in your classroom, you can find it <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-to-School-New-Year-Freebie-4281625" target="_blank">here as a freebie in my TpT store.</a> </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy New Year,</div>

Celebrated every year on September 19th, this appeals to the imaginative side of each student. Without much class interruption, you can celebrate this holiday while you allow your kiddos to talk like a pirate for the day. Here are some resources that I found for Talk Like a Pirate Day:<br />

If you don't know what I'm talking about, you might want to <a href="https://mrstechk12.blogspot.com/2017/08/new-school-year-new-job.html" target="_blank">start here</a>. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Brief Overview of our goals:</b> I work at a K-12 private school. We purchased 21 iPads (5th Gen) to suit the needs of our 1st - 4th grade classes. The way that our school does electives, I went to each class one day a week for 40 minutes. When the iPad cart wasn't in use (3rd-7th period each day), teachers were able to "rent it out" from me for full use in their classroom. I had two teachers that did this weekly from day 1, and a few others took advantage of it throughout the year. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Recommendations: </b></div>
<div>
<b>1. Buy big iPads. </b>We set up Apple Classroom on each of the iPads and because each student had their own log in, it stores each profile as it's own app owner and in turn saved each app 8 times (one for each class). We quickly realized that this was consuming so much storage so we spent a lot of time adding and deleting apps in an attempt to save the most room possible. I would sometimes forget what we deleted and want to go back and use it later in the year and wouldn't be able to. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>2. Plan ahead. </b>Again, it isn't super easy to add apps to each iPad. I didn't really know what to expect with an iPad mobile lab so I didn't do a ton of planning ahead of time. I wish that I would've done more research on apps that I wanted to use, because it would've made sense to teach some of them in a different order. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>3. If you don't use Google Classroom (or the like), invest in teaching your kids to use Seesaw.</b> What I love about Seesaw is that your students can turn in any work that they do on the iPads into you. I love that they can share their work with one another and even comment and give constructive feedback to one another. At the beginning of the year, I wasn't using Seesaw and was having a hard time collecting the work that the students were doing. If they know that they aren't turning it in, then they don't give it their best effort. Adding Seesaw and collecting everything they did (done or not) was one of the best decisions that I made this year. </div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>4. Be PATIENT. </b>This is a learning curve. You are going into another teacher's classroom to work in their environment. Whether you like it or not, their classroom management styles overflow into your technology time. Also, there are days when all the apps will crash, when the internet won't work, or when half the students won't listen to your directions. Just breathe. Take it one day at a time.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>5. Allow for some "fun time" or "free days" for those classes that need that extra push.</b> One thing that I loved to do with my classes was allow them 2-3 minutes of 'fun time' on their devices if they had good behavior all class. This wasn't complete free reign of the iPad, but it was allowing them to choose an app that we have worked on before to play on. I typically didn't let them on the internet because it is just far too much to manage. If they were talking when I was or off topic or not paying attention, I would take their free minutes away one minute at a time. This was an effective classroom management strategy for me. With my lower grades who don't move to apps as quickly and wouldn't benefit from 2-3 minutes of fun time, I instituted 'free days'. This would be once (maybe) a quarter when they got to pick any app to play on during class time. I would take time away from this day, and I even ended it early a few times due to behavior. These were just simple ideas that worked for me to get kids to stay on task and follow directions. </div>
<div>

So I know that I have already shared with you some of my favorite coding apps on my blog both for <a href="https://mrstechk12.blogspot.com/2017/09/ipads-week-3-coding-apps.html" target="_blank">iPads</a> and <a href="https://mrstechk12.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-best-websites-to-teach-code-k-12.html" target="_blank">desktops</a>, but I wanted to get back on here and share with you about Apple's Swift Playgrounds that they released as their version of a coding app. As always, something that is based on the device on which it is being played is going to function beautifully, and this is no exception with Swift Playgrounds. I love that Apple shares user guides, help guides, and starts with the most basic versions to get you coding. I wouldn't recommend this as the very first coding you ever do, but I sat in a classroom with many other educators who had never coded before, and they did just fine on this. It does require more reading, so I would recommend it to students who are readers, but we all know that our students are smart enough to figure lots of things out without reading the directions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnQ2Vupl8FO1RNjSbdKUupfF_dY7TdDytiqxfLJ9Ufx8dy-fTftQJqh32x4YToowqtH09okkRZV5x69LMhiWXk1y52k8clYi8VRnZBu89ikJP-bLYqzUuR_u6_DS_-axNFBfj6XOcM/s1600/playgrounds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnQ2Vupl8FO1RNjSbdKUupfF_dY7TdDytiqxfLJ9Ufx8dy-fTftQJqh32x4YToowqtH09okkRZV5x69LMhiWXk1y52k8clYi8VRnZBu89ikJP-bLYqzUuR_u6_DS_-axNFBfj6XOcM/s400/playgrounds.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the cute little character that Apple came up with and I also like that there are many levels and layers to the Playgrounds app. I have been working on it in my free time since FETC (end of January) and I still haven't completed all the levels. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I look forward to using Playgrounds often in my classroom next year. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Coding,</div>

One of my favorite parts of Draw & Tell is the freedom to have students draw freely. I love to use this for them to create a word picture while we are reading a book to keep their hands busy. It is also a fun way for them to just color for a brain break and to fill in a little free time while they wait for their other classmates to finish. Honestly, who doesn't love to color?! While they are coloring, they can also add clip art or extra designs to the picture and they can color in patterns - say what?!</div>

Lego Creator is a game that all of my students have enjoyed working on over the course of the year. I originally found it as entertainment for my boys when I had a small group project that I was completing with my girls, but it has honestly been enjoyed by all. You essentially start out with an empty island and you collect blocks to use as currency to build up your island (and add future islands). Each time you are able to build something new, it gives the students choices on what they can pick. They really enjoy the creative part of it, as well as seeing how many blocks they can collect. (As you can see in the picture below, I hold the record with 1500+ :p) </div>

Newsela reminds me of an app that I used 5 years ago when I was doing my Student Teaching in a Special Education classroom. We used it often because we loved that we could so easily change reading levels. We also loved that our simplest readers could still read the current events that we were discussing. Honestly, I can't remember the name of that site that we used, but Newsela is so similar and I have loved using it in my elementary classrooms. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidgLv8SqXdGA-b1wp0WUXRmaMLtvFjiwFULOlUY9Qz68e0aX47IGgdI1yZcPAmK7SuVh_tWQCSMOm-rmyZlMt64_tKkfGel7Y3Oar09HyZlri4dK7pi463a_TmHOFqQ9BazXLZWdQN/s1600/newsele.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidgLv8SqXdGA-b1wp0WUXRmaMLtvFjiwFULOlUY9Qz68e0aX47IGgdI1yZcPAmK7SuVh_tWQCSMOm-rmyZlMt64_tKkfGel7Y3Oar09HyZlri4dK7pi463a_TmHOFqQ9BazXLZWdQN/s320/newsele.png" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm not going to go crazy in depth, but you can see that the premise of this app is the ability to assign articles for your students to read at their reading levels. They can also work on vocabulary and reading comprehension through the quizzes that are attached to many of the articles. There is also a feature on many articles that allows the article to be translated into Spanish. What a great tool for bilingual students/teachers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are a variety of articles to choose from - kids, arts, health, arts & culture, science, government & economics, war & peace, science & math, world history, sports, etc. It is important to keep our upper elementary and secondary students somewhat in tune with what is going on in the world around them. It is also important for them to read news type articles and for them to have discussions about the truths and opinions in articles. This helps our students think for themselves and form their own opinions, which grows strong men and women in the future. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
As I look through the Daily Wonder App, which places a focus on kindness, I wanted to see what I could use this for in my classroom. Here are a few ideas that I came up with to build a better classroom community: </div>
<ul>
<li><u>Journal prompts</u> <span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.31in;">–
display or write the daily wonder on the board. Have the students journal each

these quotes as you see fit to engage the class in discussion. I always love to
hear what the quotes mean to each students, so have them share. You could pick
a different student to read the quote each day and share what it means to them,
or you could read it and just popcorn the students answers</span></li>

have the students complete this each week as part of a grade or a challenge.
For my students, we made ‘kind’ posters, and they got to write the date they
completed each challenge. We are trying to see how can be “most kind” this
year. </span></li>

Pages is similar to Microsoft Word in the fact that it is mainly used for lists, papers, and jotting down notes. Though it is simplistic in its design, there are lots of great ways to use Pages in the classroom. I love to use it to have the students write a quick paragraph about their weekend, or for them to answer a journal question. Another fun way is to have them make a list of their goals for the new year or a timetable of their morning routine. It is a great way to have students use a little bit of technology, and super easy for them to share anything that they create with you via Air Drop or Seesaw. </div>

Shout out to Numbers for making Excel sit down for a second. My first graders have navigated Numbers so much easier than they have Excel. I'm not sure if it is the layout or the look or that it's on an iPad or what, but wow! They blow me away with how quickly they can pick some of these things up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Numbers is fabulous because it is a virtual storage for all sorts of data for you - and the best part - it does most of the calculations for you if you know how to. Seriously y'all, teach your kids how to use numbers. Every year for Science Fair, I watch our high school students STRUGGLE with how to make graphs and charts from their data. Teach them young using Numbers (or Excel, too) about inputting their data and creating charts & graphs. I PROMISE they will be thankful to you one day! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love to hear the characteristics of main characters of a book from a student perspective.<br />
<br />
ChatterPix allows students to take a picture of a character (or take a picture of a drawing) and give the character a voice. They simply draw a line where their mouth is, and then records a 30 second video as the character. I typically have my students summarize the characteristics of a character in 30 seconds.<br />
<br />
Another way I have used ChatterPix is to have students take a picture of themselves, and then use ChatterPix to explain their standing on a topic we are discussing in class.<br />
<br />
This is just a fun way for the to share an opinion or a summary of a character in a way that you can reflect on later.<br />

Telestory is SUCH a fun app to use in the classroom for weather reports or classroom updates. We do morning announcements at our school, but only in High School. My Middle School kids really wanted to try out announcements so we used this app originally to start with them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Basically, you can make cue cards, choose disguises, and record yourself doing weather, sports, news anchor or top stories. It is a great way to have students begin the recording and video process. It is also great for video awareness and public speaking. Using an app like this helps reinforce these skills while also allowing the students to create & have fun! </div>
